Now that I’ve radically changed my eating habits and started a low carb lifestyle, I have been experimenting with the different types of low carb pasta that are available. If you are a pasta lover like me and need to lose weight, eating low carb can be a real challenge. Also, finding low carb pasta alternatives can be tricky. So what do I mean when I say “eating low carb” ? It works just like it sounds. This type of diet means you cut way back on the number of carbs you eat each day.
The recommended daily number of carbohydrates by government reports is 300 grams. So instead, the person wanting to lose weight, Low carb pasta should only eat between 20 and 60 grams of carbohydrates per day. This type of diet works differently for each person, and the number of daily carbs for one may not be enough for another. Once you start eating low carb, you’ll quickly find out what works best for you. Some factors to be considered would be your metabolism and how close you might be to your desired weight.
You can get caught up in all of the science of how your body burns carbohydrates for fuel and the state your body is in when it goes into ketosis, but I try to avoid getting into the technical aspects. You’re smart enough to read the label and you can make your own informed decisions about what works well for you. Besides, this is not some new discovery that has been made. Man has been living a low carb lifestyle for thousands upon thousands of years. That’s because, until this last century, the only thing available was fresh food! To be simple about it, this diet works because it is about eating fresh food.
Well, let me get back to the pasta discussion. Some of the products available out there really are not as good for this kind of diet as they seem. If this type of lifestyle is to produce good results for you, you will have to become a label reader. Some pasta products are 0 carbs and others out there say there are only a small number in each serving. The tricky part is this, how many servings did I just eat? In America, we are accustomed to BIG portions. If there were only 1/2 cup of a vegetable on our plate and 4 oz. of meat, it would be sent back to the kitchen and we would call for the manager! Add this to the fact that if you are low carb dieting, you can eat until you are satisfied. This spells trouble if your pasta has 12 grams of carbohydrates, and you just ate 3 servings. You can quickly get to the limit in only one meal with a little bread added in.
